Apr 14, 2010 · Anyone have any cam recommendations for an LQ9 with LS3 heads and intake? This is going into a 70' Chevelle with a (forthcoming) T56. I would like to see a solid 500hp at the flywheel, but not looking for anything too extravagant (driveability is still key). The engine is otherwise planned to be stock-ish.
More accurately, the LS3 was developed from the L92, particularly the amazing high-flow cylinder heads that first appeared on the L92. The L92 cylinder heads are based on those developed for the high-performance LS2 and LS6 car V8s. However the L92 heads improve considerably on both the LS6 and LS2 heads.
The LQ9 uses flat top pistons for 10.1:1 CR. Availability. 300 HP LQ4 is found in the 1999-2007 HD truck. 1999-'00 have iron heads, 2001-'07 use aluminum heads. 325 HP LQ4 is found in the GMC Denali C3 pickup and SUV. 345 HP LQ9 is found in the 2002-up Cadillac Escalade, Silverado SS pickup and 2004-up B4V VHO 2WD 1/2 ton pickup.

A popular upgrade to the LQ4 and LQ9 is to install a set of LS3 heads and intake. The LS3 heads will fit on any LS block with a minimum 4.000 in. bore. However, the LS3 had a 4.065 in. bore. This means that the valves will be closer to the cylinder walls.
I know with the l92/ls3 heads and the hot cam it should be very close to 500hp. But I just read an artical in GM high tech that an aftermarket set of cathedral heads flow just as good as stock ls3 heads but the cathedral heads have better low end flow. They said for the street you would actually be better off with the aftermarket gen 3 heads.
